Walking Among Giants: The Art of Leaving a Mark

The crisp autumn air greeted me as I walked the Kester International Promenade on the campus of High Point University last weekend. It’s one of those rare places where inspiration seems to gather—brick by brick, word by word. Along that pathway stand statues of world leaders, innovators, and visionaries—twenty in all—each accompanied by a quote offering timeless wisdom.

I made it a point to pause at every bench, to listen in silence, and to give thanks for how God used each of them to shape humanity in their own unique way. As I neared the end of my walk, one inscription stopped me cold. It was a quote from Vincent Van Gogh:

“I am still far from being what I want to be, but with God’s help I shall succeed.”

Those simple words carried profound weight. Van Gogh—now revered among history’s greatest artists—sold only one painting in his lifetime. He battled depression and mental illness, yet through faith and perseverance, he painted some of the most luminous works the world has ever known. His story reminded me that each of us, in our own way, is called to contribute something meaningful.

Three Reflections from the Promenade

1. Inspiration Is Everywhere—If We Slow Down to See It
Amid the rush of daily life, we often miss the beauty around us. The Promenade reminded me that wisdom is all around—waiting to be discovered in a quote, a conversation, or a quiet walk. We just have to take the time to notice.

2. Every Act, Big or Small, Leaves a Mark
The world’s great leaders are celebrated not because they sought fame, but because they lived with purpose. You and I have that same ability—to make a difference through the work we do, the people we serve, and the kindness we extend.

3. Faith Fuels Perseverance
Van Gogh’s life shows that faith doesn’t always remove hardship—it sustains us through it. Each of us is a work in progress, but when we trust that our Creator is still painting our story, we find the courage to continue.

Conclusion

That quiet walk through High Point University reminded me that greatness isn’t found in recognition—it’s found in persistence, purpose, and faith. We may not all be Edisons or Mother Teresa's, but we can all be lights in our own corner of the world.
