It Was Never Just About the Golf: What Every Leader Can Learn from an Invitation

When I was asked to join the North Carolina Golf Panel, I thought it would be about great courses and great golf. And it was. But what I didn’t expect was how much it would teach me about opportunity, relationships, and what it really means to make the most of the rooms you’re invited into. That’s exactly what I discovered as a member of the North Carolina Golf Panel.

What began as an invitation from the late Tim Kent more than 15 years ago became something far greater than I ever expected. Yes, it offered access to some of the most beautiful and historic courses in the country. But more importantly, it revealed something I now share with audiences across the country:

The rooms you’re invited into are rarely just about the room, they’re about what you bring into them.

Early on, I realized I had a choice. I could simply enjoy the experience or I could leverage it. That decision led me to collaborate with Kevin Brafford to create Classic North Carolina Golf Courses, capturing on canvas what so many experience only in passing.

But the real story isn’t about the book. It’s about what the experience taught me. 

Don’t Just Accept the Invitation, Expand It
Too often, we step into opportunities and stop there. But the real impact begins when you extend that opportunity to others. Whether it was inviting collaborators or bringing friends into the panel, I’ve learned that shared experiences multiply their value.

North Carolina is often called the home of American golf, and walking those courses reminds you why. Great environments challenge you to see differently, think bigger, and appreciate excellence. The same is true in business, leadership, and life, where you spend your time matters.

Bring Your Gift Into Every Room
For me, that gift is art. For you, it may be leadership, strategy, vision, or connection. The mistake many make is leaving their gift behind when they enter a new space. The opportunity is to bring it forward and use it to elevate the experience for everyone involved.
