Leadership Lessons from a Hinge

Leadership Lessons from a Hinge

Sometimes life forces us to pause. I’m writing this while flat on my back, recovering from another flare-up that reminds me of the hardware holding me together — titanium rods and screws installed by my extraordinary neurosurgeon, Dr. Henry Elsner. Without his skill, my spine — the ultimate hinge — wouldn’t have the strength to bear the weight of my frame or my life’s journey.

Three small brass hinges, barely noticeable, yet essential. They carry the full weight of a hundred-pound door and allow it to open with effortless grace. And it struck me: leadership, like life, depends on hinges.

Real Strength Works Quietly
True leadership doesn’t shout. It supports. Just as a hinge stays mostly hidden, the most effective leaders operate in humility — bearing the weight of others, enabling them to move and grow. The measure of strength is not visibility but reliability.

Alignment Enables Momentum
A door only moves smoothly when its hinges are properly aligned. In teams, alignment matters just as much. When vision, values, and action line up, progress happens naturally. When they don’t, the door grinds. Great leaders take time to realign — to tighten the bolts of purpose and keep movement fluid.

Small Hinges Swing Big Doors
It’s often the smallest adjustments that create the biggest change. A listening ear, a note of appreciation, a moment of trust — these are leadership hinges. They may seem minor, but they open doors of loyalty, creativity, and transformation.

As I lay reflecting on that door and my own spine, I realized how perfectly life mirrors design. Whether in anatomy, architecture, or leadership, balance and purpose come from those who carry weight quietly, align consistently, and move gracefully.

And sometimes, those hinges are forged from titanium — built to last, built to serve, and built to keep opening the way forward.
