"The Art of Hospitality: How Simple Acts Create Lasting Impressions"

Sometimes, making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures; often, it’s in the simplest acts of kindness. Recently, I had the privilege of starting my newest commission at High Point University, capturing the inspiring beauty of its campus through my art. Guided by the vision of Dr. Nido Qubein, the university has transformed remarkably over the past decade. And as I embarked on this journey, I was met with warm hospitality, particularly from Chief Duncan, Officer Dillard, and a gracious woman named Grace. Their small yet impactful gestures reminded me of how much a little kindness can uplift and inspire.

A Welcoming Spirit Opens Doors – From my first interaction with Chief Duncan, I felt welcomed and valued. She recognized my work and made sure I had the support needed to fulfill this commission. This welcoming spirit underscores how powerful it is when people embrace others with openness and genuine hospitality, setting the stage for positive connections and collaboration.

Kindness is in the Details – Officer Dillard, who was tasked with showing me around, went above and beyond. When I casually mentioned wanting a simple cup of coffee, he not only offered suggestions but personally escorted me to find one. His thoughtfulness reminded me that sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference—kindness, thoughtfulness, and willingness to go the extra mile.

The Beauty of Genuine Service – Inside the cafeteria, I met Grace, who insisted on making me a fresh pot of coffee. This simple gesture was laced with her warmth and hospitality, her delight in serving others clear as day. She didn’t just offer coffee; she offered an experience, an interaction filled with kindness and connection. It’s a reminder that when we serve others with heart, we leave an indelible mark that enriches both lives.

Reflecting on my day at High Point University, I realize that "making a difference" doesn’t need fanfare or elaborate efforts. It’s often the smallest gestures—someone making you feel welcomed, taking time to care, or simply sharing a kind word—that brighten a person’s day and inspire them to pay it forward.

This experience left me with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude as I start this project. I’m looking forward to capturing not just the beauty of HPU’s campus but also the spirit of the people who make it such a special place.
