You Never Know Who Is Watching

One of the most surprising things about influence is that it rarely announces itself.

It doesn't arrive with applause or a standing ovation. More often, it's sitting quietly in the back of the room. It's the young professional attending their first conference. The volunteer who has just joined a committee. The future leader who is paying far more attention than you realize.

Years ago, a young artist named Mike Gaydon would occasionally stop by my gallery in Greensboro. Like many artists, he enjoyed painting, but he was equally intrigued by everything surrounding it. He watched collectors discover paintings that spoke to them. He observed book signings, PBS appearances, community projects, and the countless conversations that continued long after the artwork was complete. Neither of us could have imagined that those quiet visits would one day lead to my exhibiting in the Spotlight Gallery at Martin House Gallery in Blowing Rock.

Looking back, I realize Mike wasn't simply watching an artist. He was learning how relationships create opportunity. That experience reminds me of something I often share with association audiences across the country.

Leadership is rarely about the big moments. It's about what people quietly observe every day.

First, people are always learning from our example.
As leaders, we tend to believe our greatest influence comes from the presentations we give or the initiatives we launch. Yet the lessons people remember most often come from how we encourage others, welcome a first-time attendee, listen to a new idea, or celebrate someone else's success. Culture is built long before it's ever written into a strategic plan.

Second, meaningful organizations are built one relationship at a time.
The strongest associations don't simply deliver conferences or educational programs. They create places where people feel valued. Every introduction, every conversation in a hallway, every mentor who takes a few extra minutes to invest in someone else strengthens the entire organization. That's how trust grows, and trust is what keeps members coming back.

Finally, never underestimate the ripple effect of a single interaction.
Years after Mike first walked through my gallery, he discovered that his greatest gift wasn't creating art—it was helping others discover it. Today he has built a gallery where artists, collectors, and community come together in meaningful ways. Neither of us could have predicted that journey. It began with a few conversations and a shared appreciation for the power of art.

Isn't that true of every great leader?

We seldom know which conversation will encourage a future board chair, inspire a new volunteer, or give someone the confidence to step into a leadership role. The seeds we plant today often bear fruit long after we've forgotten where we planted them.  That's why I believe leadership is less about commanding attention and more about earning it.  Whether you're planning a conference, leading an association, or simply investing in the people around you, remember this:

You never really know who is watching.
Lead with authenticity. Encourage generously. Build relationships intentionally.  Because the next person quietly observing your example may someday become the leader who inspires someone else.
