When a Moment Moves Us   
Timing May Be the Most Important Leadership Skill of All

As I prepared for my keynote, There's an ART to Making a Difference, I found myself returning to one of North Carolina's most recognizable landmarks—the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Its story isn't just about engineering.  It's about leadership.

For generations, the lighthouse faithfully guarded the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." But while the lighthouse stood still, the shoreline didn't. By the 1970s, the Atlantic Ocean had advanced to its very foundation. Everyone agreed something had to be done. The challenge was deciding what.  For more than twenty-five years, solutions were debated. Build a seawall. Leave it where it stood. Continue studying the problem.

Then one bold decision changed everything.  Rather than trying to stop the ocean, engineers lifted nearly 5,000 tons of history and moved the lighthouse almost 2,900 feet inland. What had been delayed for decades was accomplished in less than a month.

That story has stayed with me because it reflects a challenge every leader faces.  Sometimes the greatest risk isn't making the wrong decision.  It's waiting too long to make one.  Throughout my own journey, I've discovered that the moments that define our lives rarely arrive with fanfare. Whether it was pausing to help a homeless gentleman—an encounter that ultimately inspired the Honor Card—or recognizing the opportunity to preserve Cape Hatteras on canvas before it was moved, I've learned that opportunities seldom announce themselves. They simply appear, inviting us to act.

Leadership Through the Lens of Art

In my keynote, I share three principles that every leader can embrace:

• Awareness — Recognize opportunities that others overlook.

• Resourcefulness — Use what you already have to create meaningful impact.

• Timing — Act while the opportunity is still before you.

Individually, each principle is powerful.  Together, they become transformational.

Recently, these ideas came to life at the Association Executives of North Carolina Annual Conference. The commemorative painting created for the event became far more than artwork. Through a partnership with Source4, hundreds of limited-edition prints were produced to benefit the AENC Scholarship Fund, allowing attendees to support future leaders while taking home a lasting reminder that every person has the ability to make a difference.

Watching association leaders carry those prints home reminded me why I love speaking. A painting may eventually hang on a wall.  But an idea can travel home with someone, influence a decision, inspire a team, strengthen an organization, or even change a life.  That's why I believe every audience deserves more than motivation.  They deserve a message they can put into action the moment they walk out the door.

What Opportunity Is Waiting for You?

Every organization faces its own version of Cape Hatteras.  A challenge that requires awareness to recognize, resourcefulness to solve, and the courage to act before the moment passes.  The question isn't whether those opportunities exist.  The question is whether we'll recognize them when they appear.
