The Business of Caring: In a fast-moving world, people still long to be remembered.

The Business of Caring
In a fast-moving world, people still long to be remembered.

There was a time when hearing the words “Thinking of you” carried extraordinary weight.

Not because of grand gestures or elaborate plans but because those three simple words reminded us that someone cared enough to pause, reflect, and reach out.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on something my sweet Aunt Kate often told me: "Remember where you come from and how it used to be." The older I get, the more wisdom I find in those words.

In today’s business world, we move fast. Meetings fill calendars, emails pile up, notifications compete for our attention. Yet despite all our technology and connectivity, many people still quietly wonder if they are truly seen, valued, or appreciated.

That’s why the smallest gestures often leave the deepest impressions. A handwritten note, a phone call, a word of encouragement, a sincere acknowledgment. Three simple words: Thinking of you.

Those moments matter because they remind us that business is still deeply personal. People may remember the presentation, the strategy, or the sale, but they never forget how someone made them feel.

Years ago, I came across a reflection from writer Ralph Marston that has stayed with me ever since:

“Life will not unfold exactly the way you'd like it to.
But that doesn't mean you must be unhappy when things fail to go your way.
Indeed, your biggest disappointments can often, eventually, lead you to your most profound joys.”

What I appreciate most about those words is the reminder that life, leadership, and relationships are rarely built during perfect moments. More often, they are strengthened through encouragement, resilience, gratitude, and connection.

As speakers, leaders, business owners, and professionals, perhaps one of the greatest opportunities we have is simply to let people know they matter.

Not because we need something.
Not because there is an agenda.
But because human connection still carries extraordinary value.

When I pause long enough to reflect on where I came from, the people who encouraged me along the way, and the simple kindnesses that shaped my life, I can’t help but bow my head and quietly say: “Thank you, Lord.”

And perhaps that’s a reminder worth sharing more often. Never underestimate the power of letting someone know you’re thinking about them.
