When People Feel Included, Everything Changes

When People Feel Included, Everything Changes

There was a moment during my latest art show when I realized something important had shifted and it had nothing to do with the paintings. Normally at an opening, guests move casually through the rooms, enjoy conversation, reconnect with friends, and occasionally stop long enough to ask about a piece of artwork. But this year, I decided to try something different. I purchased two fine bottles of wine and invited guests to vote for their favorite Contemporary painting and favorite Traditional work in the show. At the end of the evening, we would draw two names from the ballots and award the winners the wine.

That was it. No elaborate strategy. No marketing campaign. Just a simple invitation to participate. What happened next fascinated me.  Suddenly people slowed down. Conversations deepened. Couples debated paintings like seasoned gallery judges. Guests revisited rooms, pointed out details, discussed emotion, color, mood, and meaning. For one evening, everyone became an art critic and honestly, they loved it.

Driving home that night, I couldn’t help but think how similar that experience is to what Associations and Meeting Planners face every day. People don’t simply want to attend an event anymore. They want to feel part of it.

Inclusion Creates Engagement
The moment guests realized their opinions mattered, the entire atmosphere changed. They moved from passive observers to active participants.  And isn’t that exactly what every conference, meeting, and association gathering hopes to accomplish?

Attendees want more than information. They want involvement. They want opportunities to contribute, connect, share ideas, and feel that their presence matters. The most memorable events are rarely the ones with the biggest stages or budgets. They are the ones where people feel seen, heard, and included in the experience. When that happens, energy changes.

The Loudest Applause Isn’t Always the Greatest Impact
One of the surprises from the evening was this: out of the top five audience favorites, only one painting sold that night, yet we sold fourteen paintings overall.

That reminded me of something important about audiences. The session everyone talks about in the hallway may not always be the one that changes someone’s life. The boldest keynote may generate excitement, while a quieter conversation or breakout session may deeply resonate with an attendee facing a personal or professional challenge.

Impact is personal.  Meeting planners understand this better than anyone. A successful event isn’t measured solely by applause or social media posts. It’s measured by the connections people carry home afterward.

Great Experiences Spark Conversation
There were no wrong answers. By the end of the evening, the gallery no longer felt like a room filled with paintings. It felt like a room filled with stories, perspectives, curiosity, and meaningful conversations.

That’s what great meetings and conferences do as well. The best events don’t just transfer information. They create environments where conversations happen naturally, relationships deepen, ideas emerge, and people walk away feeling inspired to think differently.

Conclusion

After fifty years as a professional artist, I can honestly say this became one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve ever had during a show. Not because it changed the way I paint - it won’t. Authentic work still has to come from instinct, experience, and heart.

But it reminded me of something powerful that applies far beyond the walls of a gallery. People are hungry to connect.  And sometimes all it takes is a simple invitation to participate. A moment to feel included. A reason to engage more deeply.

Whether it’s an art show, a conference, or an annual meeting, the experiences people remember most are often the ones where they didn’t just attend.
