What the Field Teaches: Lessons From 38 Years of Showing Up

On a crisp morning at the Farmers Market, I noticed a woman walking toward my table wearing a small button: “Make America Kind Again.” Before she even spoke, her pin summed up the spirit of the day. Not long after, someone shared a memory from decades past—standing in line with her mother at my Gallery waiting for my annual print giveaway. And at Fleet-Plummer, longtime friend Steve Hassenfelt listened quietly to the story of this year’s Honor Card and then offered a heartfelt donation—no card, no print, no recognition needed.

Those moments reminded me that real impact isn’t measured in big speeches or grand stages. It’s found in these everyday encounters, meeting people where they live, work, and shop. This is what leadership through service looks like. And I’m grateful to have partners like Cheryl Brandberg and Melinda Billings from CHS, and my associate Joy Ross, whose dedication makes these community events possible. When we step into the field together, we learn more about people—and purpose—than any boardroom can teach.

Three Lessons for Leaders in Every Field

1. Leadership Happens One Person at a Time

A quiet donor, a stranger offering kindness, a supporter sharing a memory—these moments remind me that influence is earned by showing up consistently, not occasionally.

2. Legacy Comes From Longevity

When someone recalls standing with their mother in line for a print decades ago, it reminds me that consistent service builds a legacy people can trust—and return to.

3. Humility Builds Connection

After 38 years, the Honor Card is still just $5. That simplicity is the reason people from every walk of life step forward. Humility invites participation. Humility connects.

A Takeaway for Today’s Leaders

No matter your field, your mission, or your role, the greatest impact often begins with the smallest gesture. When you lead with gratitude, show up with humility, and create opportunities for others to join the mission, people rise to meet you. That’s the power of service—and the heart of making a difference.
